Finished: Beyond Armageddon

As an anthology this book is a great collection of fiction by some of the greatest sci-fi writers ever to pick up a pen (or use a typewriter). For stories that were mostly written pre-cold war and in some cases pre WW2 they are amazing perceptive in the realities of a post-apocalyptic environment.

Finished: Forecast  by Chris Keith

This was an ok book. The storyline was solid & the characters well developed. It was rather predictable that just as all hope is lost, in ride some navy men to save the two remaining balloonists. It was an interesting concept though to have these people initially survive the nuclear war by riding in a space balloon.

Finished: Things Fall Apart.. by Fred Heiser

Overall the plot of this book is pretty solid. However, it could do with some editing & possibly a bit of a re-work. The lead characters are not in anyway survivalists nor are they hard core preppers. BUT they seem to know how to operate guns, build good defense and be self sufficient. While it is entirely plausible, the way in which the characters are developed just makes you question how they know all that stuff. Nor do I think that someone with so little experience could "single handedly take down a bikie gang".

Lucky for the author I like nuclear apocalyse stories...

Pretty excited!!!!! RAW is heading to Perth next July.. Can't wait!!!! Been a while since they were last here, and in a new venue I am hoping it will be a vastly superior experience to the last time. Have managed to get tix on the entrance ramp so am looking forward to getting up close & personal with CM Punk hehe.

Finished: A Game of Thrones by George RR Martin

Despite the fact that my kindle is dying, I managed to get through the first book in this epic series. I am wont to compare this epic to the massive tomes that Peter F Hamilton writes. Only because of the sheer scale of the stories. And the huge numbers of points of views. Martin does it well. Hamilton does not. Martin has made it easy to follow a story which is developed from multiple view points by separating these into chapters, focusing on only one character. It makes it an enjoyable and easy read. Once you learn who the character is & where they fit in the story. Whereas Hamiltons books become confusing & it is easy to lose track of whose point of view exactly you are seeing the story from.

Movie Bloggin' 28th November 2012

Movie: The Final Countdown (1980) Starring Martin Sheen, Kirk Douglas

This movie showed alot of promise. If you could get past the really corny special effects as the Nimitz travelled back in time that is.

The premise for this movie is very similar to the books written by John Birmingham, where a US ship is transported back in time to a point in WW2. In this case, the day before Japan attacks Pearl Harbor. And it was at this point that things went pear shaped.

It could have been an amazing study of what happens when you mess with time. But sadly, just as things looked to get interesting, the "storm" reappeared, chased down the Nimitz & sucked them back to the present.

I think they should make a movie version of the John Birmingham books, because now, I just want to see what it would look like with all those awesome CGI special effects. Not to mention it may offest some of the disappointment I felt at the end of this movie!!

Nickelback - Perth Arena - November 17th 2012

My first time inside the brand spanking new arena. While it looks like a transformer, the acoustics are MUCH better then the Burswood Dome. And as always, Nickelback put on an awesome show!

Spot the Difference
Sadly, their support act sucked big time(although not as badly as the last time I saw Nickelback). Seriously - lyrics need to be more diversified then "Yeah, go motherF*cker".. And did the guitarist even have a face? Oh & playing however many guitar solos do not count as a "song". My advice to Jackson Firebird - get yourselves a good lead singer who can (a) SING, (b) write good lyrics & (c) teach you the finer points of ENTERTAINING PEOPLE - that not every song needs to be a massive guitar/drum solo!!! Why couldn't Nickelback bring Daughtry with them like they did in Europe?!!!

Book Bloggin' 18th November 2012

Finished: King of Bombs by Sheldon Filger

Where to start? I love this genre. And the author had a solid concept with a great story. BUT.. yes there is a but. Unfortunately his writing really need a LOT of work. I think he seriously needs to adhere to the less is more philosophy. Writing in practically every paragraph that "his eyes showed the tension he was feeling" or something along those lines detracts. You build tension, suspense etc by what is going on, not by saying this character or that character has a face full of tension. And especially not so verbosely that it detracts from an otherwise solid story.

I also seriously doubt any of the protagonists would be showing even a "modicum" of respect or admiration for the terrorists.

Overall an ok book. Sadly the writing comes across as forced (whether to get the word count up I don't know) and the continual harping on this person's eyes or that persons face, along with the way in which he describes the physical characteristics of the characters just detracts from the story for me. The last page is probably the worst for that. And that's sad, because it is a cracker of an ending that could have been written so much better.

Finished: Down to a Sunless Sea by David Graham

Written in the years of the oil crisis of the 1970's/early 80's this book paints a stark picture on just how fast things can fall apart. America is out of oil & with a completely worthless dollar. Yet the giant conglomerates refuse to see that it is their greed & short sightedness which is driving the collapse ever faster. America is left with no power, no food & starving populations just trying to get out. Cue that old Cold War foe USSR deciding now is the time to get revenge & 4 hours later, the earth is a radioactive wasteland. With the excepetion of one british plane carryng expat Americans & one Antinov carrying Russian woman & children.

I love that the author shows that rather then death mayhem & hatred between the 2 planes, there is a spirit of love & humanity. After all, after the end of the world, we are all just humans, not "British" or "Armenian" or wherever you had the good (or bad) luck to be born. The sooner people realise this fundamental truth, that we are all the same when you strip away nationality & religion & stop using these as an excuse to hate people well, the happier this world will be. Although, one point in this book which I think would be a great way to deal with criminals is to brand their foreheads. If they are multiple reoffenders, why not brand them set them free under rules of permanent exclusion from all amenities - jobs & food & dole and everything else, with stiff penalties for those who aid them. See how long they last then.  Sometimes a deterent has to be harsh to help.

Finished: Underground by Andrew McGahan

Where to start? This is a brilliantly written book. And the reality is, it could so easily become fact. A world where Muslim ghettos abound, where America conspires to create a city so that the powermongers can meet & plot the fate of humanity in peace. All helped by a megalomaniac Prime Minister.

The reality is, instability creates jobs. What would all those soldiers be doing if there were no wars to fight? What would all the arms manufacturers, the secondary suppliers of the war machine do? It's a sad fact that wars are a profitable business. And if people die, well, thats just an unfortunate side effect.

Andrew McGahan has created a world that is truely scary to behold, but all too easy to imagine being real. But it is one where the main character is well rendered & the satirical way in which he deals with events makes this a really great read.

Finished: The Rift  by Walter J Williams

I love this book. I have read it quite a few times now. And it's no small little paperback either. It's a hefty hardback that breaks your wrists.. but oh is the pain worth it. This book has been so well written & researched, it's just fantastic. The author includes excerpts from letters written by people who survived the New Madrid earthquakes of 1811-1812 which helps to bring to life this story. The basic premise is that a series of massive earthquakes once again rocks the New Madrid region. And from that you get a religious fanatic who decides it the beginning of the Tribulation, a KKK Kleagle who decides now is a good time to get some racial cleansing happening & a teenage (white) boy & the black man he rescued stumbling(well floating really) along just trying to survive. This book really is an eye opening account which demonstrates just how much the US Army Corps of Engineers have bent the Mississippi River (& it's major tributaries) to their will.

Great stuff, read it!!

I love EOW books. I have a massive collection, both books & Kindle verions. Nothing smacks of entertainment better then a bunch of people being stuck in a situation they are thoroughly unprepared for. Well except for the token survivalist/ex-military man whose goon save their sorry asses that is. This book has one of each. And as an added bonus a bunch of weekend warriors/prison guards who think the best prisoner is a dead prisoner. My kind of people. I am pretty sure a bullet is cheaper then keeping someone housed, fed & entertained for however long they are gonna be banged up. Harsh? Yeah, but then I don't pay taxes to support criminals! And I am pretty sure that those self same criminals din't give a rats ass when they wereraping/murdering/stealing from their victim now did they? If they choose to not have a moral compass &/or respect for their fellow man, why should I give that to them?? Gotta give respect to earn it in my book.
Anyhoo.. enough of my personal ramblings.. this book is awesome, if you are a fan of EOW (courtesy of a massive metoer hitting and obliterating the moon) READ THIS. Great editing & great story line. Self published, but done in the correct way, not the cheap ass way!

This book was great... but.. actually, no there isn't a but. The mystery is solved of how Bosch's daughter came to live with him (& her mum died).  And actually, on reading that particular point of the book, I came away thinking, wait, what? I actually had to re-read it as it all happened so fast. Still, a great read. I have now offically read all the published books by Michael Connelly (& own them all!!), so have to wait for the next one which is duw out in November!

I bought this as a Kindle book. It cost me $12.82 off Amazon(price set by the publisher). It's a total f*ing rip off. The lines ARE DOUBLE SPACED to make the book seem longer. Now here's something for publishers to take note of. An e-book does not cost you $12.82/copy to keep & distribute as a LOAN. Yes, thats right, this is only a loaner. You never own the rights to digital books(or music)[see my earlier blog re: Bruce WIllis's battle to own his ITunes collection].  So to charge that much is just a bit rich if you'll pardon the pun. Book Bloggin' 1st October 2012

Finished: The Delta Solution by Patrick Robinson

Is it bad to say that I am glad I only bought the Kindle edition rather then the hard copy of this book? Cause it's true. I loved Patrick Robinson for YEARS. I used to be hanging out for the next edition to come out. But then the last few came out.. and I was feeling a bit blase about it all. Then I read this one. It's like he is just as over writing these books as I am with reading them. It was trite drivel which unfortunately could have been written sooo much better. I don't know too many "desert dwelling Somalians" who earn enough money to send their kids to Harvard. Most of the Somalians I have known (& I know a few) were so dirt poor & down trodden thanks to the endless civil war that they could barely send their kids to a public school here (and that's free!).  But you know, reading fiction requires a suspension of reality. And normally I am awesome at that. However, the constantly changing & rapidly improving education levels of the pirates as well as a shameless plug for his non-fiction book (which by the way was a well wriiten book), just left me wanting it to be over. And it was. All the action essentially took place in the last few pages of the books. And it was disappointing - SEALS (Delta team) come in & smash the shit out of hapless pirates. Yay. Not. I have lots of respect for SEALS, SAS & SASR.. but my goodness, this was just pathetic. He took chunks out of all the other books about their training, which was just boring because I have read it all before.. A LOT. More action was what was required. I'm done. I could go on for days, but not this time.

Finshed: The Wrath of Angels by John Connelly

Oh I was holding out high hopes for this book. I thought, FINALLY I am going to get a bigger peek at who Charlie Parker IS. Or what he really is. But sadly, it was not to be. While I really enjoyed this book, I was holding big hopes for what had been built up in the previous book. It just didn't happen. In some ways, it was like this book was written by someone else who had only a glancing knowledge of exactly what John Connelly had been building up. Rather disappointing really. Especially as the wave had been peaking with The Burning Soul in a way that announced "in the next book, you will find out WHO Charlie Parker really is". And quite a few early reviews of this book also hinted at that. But it just didn't happen. I can only hope that in the next installment we get the promised insight into Charlie Parker, because in all honesty, I really don't know how much  more this can be dragged out. The truth has to be revealed.. and soon! I don't think that revealing who Charlie Parker is will in any way detract from these stories, I think rather, it will enhance them. Bring it on!

Started: The Delta Solution by Patrick Robinson

I haven't read an Patrick Robinson for a long time. I have all his books, but they had become a bit too repetitive for my liking. However, I decided that I would give this one a crack as I could get it on Kindle a lot cheaper then I can as a paperback. We shall see how it turns out.

UPDATE: I was perusing Kindle books in search of a book to read & have discovered that Amazon now puts a disclaimer on most Kindle books (ie the hideously expensive ones!): "Price set by the publisher". What a copout. And further proof of corporate greed. Did you know that under the terms of Kindle (and Apple as another example) purchase agreements, you don't actually "own" the books/music/movies that you "buy"? No, you don't! You only borrow them on an extended loan basis. If you don't believe me, have a look at the legal battle that Bruce Willis is currently having with Apple in order to be able to leave his vast iTunes collection to his kids. If he wins, it will have vast ramifications for all digital retailers and for all the consumers out there.

Finished: The Scarecrow by Michael Connelly

I enjoyed this book. Was nice to read a non Bosch book, however, having said that, I missed the way Bosch thinks & speaks. He's so clinical in a police way, if that makes any sense. The way that Jack approached things & the way Bosch does are very different. And so Michael Connelly is able to make his characters different. Which is a fantastic skill. So often, when authors write within the same genre, the charcters seem to turn into cardboard cutouts(and this is the case with another author, who I can no longer read, as her books are so formulaic and cardboard cutout - despite varying seetings, that I can predict the ending and who will end up doing what within the first chapter. Add to that, most of the characters are completely one dimensional). With Michael Connelly, thankfully, that is not the case. The books are so well written, that it seems as though you are actually reading about their lives, rather then a fiction book. Add to this, I love the way he weaves the characters together. Characters that appear in Harry Bosch books get their own books, as is the case with this book. Love, love, love it.

Finished: The Bunker Book 2: Indiana by EJ Camacho

Hmmm... thanksfully the gayness was somewhat toned down in this book, but not by much. The level of believability was also... low. It's like there is no indecision when they come across other people/groups. Basically they are all "for" the bunker group, in which case they are immediately and without question accepted and trusted fully. As if. There's no hidden agenda's, no subterfuge. Makes it kinda boring as you can see your enemies coming a continent away.
Throw in "Mother" and it just turns bizarre. Clearly all that radiation has caused everyone NOT in the bunker to go completely gaga.
Oh & a little not to the author.. learn the difference between there, their & they're PLEASE!! They're is a contraction of they are & is not to be used where their should be used instead! It just makes for confusing reading!!!
So will I be reading the third book? Undecided. Part of me wants to know what happens, but then its all so batshit boringly predictable that I don't really want to waste my time (or my money!!!) finding out what I can already guess!

Book Bloggin' 3rd September 2012

Finished: The Bunker Book 1 by EJ Camacho

It's the end of the world as we know it thanks to a giant corporation called Genro deciding they can run the world better then the current incumbant governments. Cue  nuclear destruction and Genro trying to recover & carry out thier plans. Their militant wing "Hydra" are clearly all GAY. They fight, train & KILL naked. Yep. Naked. The next breed of "super warriors" are all butt buddies. Apparently because it was good for the Greeks, who felt women were only around for "breeding on" it's good for Hydra.

This book was a seriously disturbing read on so many levels. Firstly the entire book/conversations/description was stilted and forced. The author has clearly never heard or embraced the term "less is more". It felt like he was trying to cover deficiencies in his ability by using word overkill. I say word overkill because he could have made this book half the length and far more enjoyable. A good place to start? The gay naked Hydra. I mean seriously, you gonna take the time to strip naked & fold your clothes before a fight? And the other guy is just going to wait while you do? YOU'RE DEAD FREAK. See thats just another level of disturbing, cause no warrior I know would take the time to get naked & ask his opponent to play nice & not KICK HIS ARSE while he does it.

The gore I think could have been modified. He either went too far or not far enough. He needed to find the happy (pun intended) middle ground. Sadly he failed. Every time.

Now this is the first of a trilogy. I bought  the first 2 only on readers reviews which sounded generally favourable. But seriously. I will be struggling to get through. I will go on faith that the second book is better written. And if it's not.. I won't be going back for the third (which is currently unreleased!).

Unfortunately this book was ruined by crap editing. And to make things even worse, they charge $10 for the book on Kindle!!!

It brings an extra level of believabilty to the text and adds to the overall richness of the story.

Is there a shortage of muses?

So, as you know I read both Michael Connelly & John Connolly. They obviously aren't related. However, having now read a good percentage of both their works, I am disturbed by some (perhaps) coincidences.. For example - both Bosch & Parker have or had a relationship with a woman named Rachel (spelling may vary) who is a criminal profiler. Both Basch & Parker are or were cops & they both are or were private investigators. Add to that they tend to follow their own path rather then tow the line & I am questioning whether in the writing world, there may be a shortage of muses? Or perhaps muses who are providing the same ideas to different authors.

Further case in point, I read a book by Patrick Robinson called Scimitar SL-2. The premise of this book is that terrorists are plotting to launch missiles into the side La Cumbra Veja (sorry if spelling is wrong) a massive volcano in the Canary islands in order to create a massive tidal wave which will devastate the east coast of the USA.  It's a well known fact that the western face of this volcano is slipping & that when it finally collapses into the sea, the devastation on the eastern seaboard of the USA will be tremendous, do to the shear volume of ocean that will be displaced.

Scimitar SL-2

Fast forward to my amazon browsing today, where I was shocked to discover a book by Stephen Coonts et al(2011), called "Deep Black: Death Wave" which by the synopsis looks pretty darn similar to the book by Patrick Robinson published in 2005.
Deep Black: Death Wave
Source: Amazon.com
Now I am a pretty skeptical person and the size of the correlation between these two books actually scares me. Because it's not like they came out within months of each other, there is a good 6 years between them.. so is someone recycling ideas or is some muse having a great laugh at the expense of people?
Being a bit of a disaster buff, I know there will always be similarities between certain types of books, but I do have to wonder if someone is having a laugh at consumers. Because seriously, it seems that way to me. It's a sad day when writers start coughing up books which have so many inherent similarities that you start to wonder where exactly they do get their ideas.

Well I have finally read all of the currently published Charlie Parker series. I can't wait until the next one is realeased in November. It's become a deep seated desire to discover who Charlie Parker is. In a twist, revealed in this book, it looks like his daughter is also special. I think its about time we get some answers!! Who (or what!) is Charlie Parker?!

Started: Foreign Influence by Brad Thor

This guy is a hard author to get ahold of. I got given a book years ago as a gift & loved it. Have looked stoically since then. And then randomly find this book in the bargain bin at the newsagents. I am hoping that at some stage, these will all appear on Kindle, because as with other authors, this really follows a central character & I have missed some obviously significant events between the two books.
Update: Brad Thor is published on Kindle, however they are waaaay over-priced!! I don't tend to pay anything more then $9.99 for a book (and that's generally a new release.). So looks like I won't be reading any more Brad Thor until he tells his publisher/amazon to get realistic with pricing!!

Finished: The Whisperers by John Connolly

This took me a bit longer then normal to finish as I went through one of my phases, where I just prefer to read magazines. My bro-in-law gave me a stack of true crime magazines, which I have worked my way through.
But have now finished this book! Was a re-read, but once again, the aspects of Charlie Parker that I had not fully understood on the first read, are becoming more obvious & fitting in to place. A confrontation is coming.. where Charlie Parker will find out who he really is.

Do you ever..

So I was sitting in bed last night reading as I normally do. And I realized (not for the first time mind you) that when I really connect with characters, I actually start hearing their words.. and the way I think they would sound. So obviously, I have in my head the way that Charlie Parker sounds.. and Angel & Louis. Then I start thinking, who would be a good person to play them? I think for Louis I would pick someone like Danny Glover. He has that soft spoken way of being menacing without even trying. He radiates the characters he is playing, so he would definitely be my pick. Angel, I am not too sure. I hear his voice, but who would be a good pick? More thinking required. And as for Charlie Parker.. hmm I hear him, but who would be best to play him? I think that he is such a deep character, you can't go for a pretty boy. Needs to be someone who has a less apparent sexuality. I was actually thinking someone like Donnie Wahlberg because he just seems to become the person he is playing. Dangerous yet comforting. Thoughts?

Finished: The Lovers by John Connolly

This was a reread & parts to do with Charlie Parker, that had previously had me going huh? I must have missed something? now made infinitely much more sense. So obviously, while these books have been written to be able to be picked up and read in any order, experience has taught me, actually, reading in order has meant a greater insight & understanding of Charlie Parker. I think that this book is one of the best simply because the true history of Charlie Parker is now being revealed. There is really only one more question that remains to be answered. WHO is Charlie Parker.. really?

Started: The Lovers by John Connolly

I have read this book before, in fact it was the first of John Connolly's books I ever read. I am looking forward to rereading this book as I think it will allow me to slot those pieces of the puzzle into the right spots.. and thus get a clearer picture still of the enigma Charlie Parker.

While I have been studying I have been reading some back issues of magazines.. Mainly "Murder Most Foul" & "True Detective". I find it fascinating to read these accounts of the things humans will do to one another. It really does make you question the level of complexity of the human psyche, that people would act with such callous disregard for the lives of others. At what point does a fantasy become unsatisfying? At what point does self preservation make you reach the point that killing is the only option you feel is left to you? I think we will never know the answers to these questions, because in reality the answers are as varied as the indivdual members of humanity themselves.

Concert Bloggin' 29th May 2012

NKOTBSB, Burswood Dome, Perth, Western Australia

Well this was the concert that I have waited a lifetime for. I didn't find out what seats I had until I arrived. Thankfully they were only 5 rows from the stage & afforded a perfect view of all the guys :) I was facing the thrust & by a great coincidence, the area the guys mainly stopped & performed at!
Obviously I was there for New Kids on the Block. They have been my favourite group since I was 11 (Poison, my other fave since I was 8!!) and I have dreamed of that moment when they appear on stage for all of those decades. It did not disappoint. There they were, my idols, in the flesh only a few metres away. I was a teenager again & I embraced it!! I could go on forever about the feelings that coursed through me (Donnie topless.. HELLO!!) but the moments that stand out for me are:

1. Donnie pointing directly at me as I took a picture. He even waited until he saw the flash!!! WAS AWESOME!! Unfortunately, the light behind him washed the shot out :(
2. Jon waving at me after I screamed out his name :) That boy has always been my fave.
3. Games.. one of my fave songs. Oh yeah!

Did I mention I GOT TO SEE NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK?!!!!!!!

PS> I don't know what Nick Carter (BSB) is normally like, but he was on something. My sis in law is a cop & she took one look at him & was like, "he's being like Ben".

Finished: The Reapers by John Connolly

I enjoyed this book. It was great to get a bit more of insight into Louis (& a lesser extent Angel). However, I felt like that Mr Connolly has intentionally held quite a bit back about both of these characters(especially their relationship). Perhaps to retain their mystery or perhaps for a later book. It did leave me feeling a little disappointed. But still a great read.

Finished: The Unquiet by John Connolly

Having previously come across the character called The Collector in later volumes of this series, it was good to see, in this book, how he was further introduced into Charlies world. Without giving too much away(sometimes knowledge can hinder, sometimes it can help.. in this case, I don't want to enter into spoiler territory.. so it's definitely a hindrance!), The Collector will become a more integral part of who Charlie is & how he achieves his goals.
Otherwise, this was another classic Charlie Parker novel. I enjoyed it, although, for various reasons, its not my favourite. You can feel the climax coming in this book, that point at which all that Charlie Parker is & who he is meant to be, will be revealed to you. In another case of knowledge being a hindrance, I know its coming, but part of me wishes I didn't already know exactly how, as I feel that's taking away from my enjoyment of the discovery! BUT! I am still looking forward to the next book...

So.. for 99cents this was an ok read. HOWEVER, the author should have employed a better proof reader & editor. There are some glaringly obvious issues (like the man who survives a nuclear power plant blowing up in his face & then walks over 110kms (70miles) home in less then 5 hours. And the fact the same character lives over looking a canyon... or is that the ocean? Even the author can't remember.

You know that thing I say about indie authors? Well this book just re-inforces that view!

Finished: The Black Angel by John Connolly

I started out not enjoying this book. It had an air pf predictability about it. I won't reveal the spoiler just in case you want to read the book. However, I will say, there was a good twist which revealed itself, piece by piece, in the fashion of a snake unfurling itself &  revealing that it is in fact huge. How will it change things? Having already read "The Lovers" I have some inkling, but I still look forward to the unread volumes of this series & the twists & turns that they will also bring.

A 99cent buy off amazon Kindle.. grassroots authors who self publish.. You know I love them! I was going to review a book for another grass roots author (who has raised my hackles over the crappiness of editing multiple times in the past) but she has had the book edited for the 3rd or 4th time ( I have lost track of exactly how many times) and I am now waiting for the new new version to hit my inbox. And as I am not at home to pick up the next John Connolly.. well.. new book it is!

Still reading "The Black Angel".. Charlie Parker is drinking a California Zin.. My favourite!!!! And yet sooooo hard to get in Australia :(  The in laws had a private tasting at a winery in California(Ledson) a few years ago. They bought back 4 bottles of the Zin & I was allowed to have it all as they don't drink reds.. oh how I wish some was still some left now!!!

And that's all for my random blog...

Finished: The White Road by John Connolly

Loved this book. One of his best by far. I know John Connolly states that you can read any of his novels as a stand alone, but I think they are best read back to back. The themes, as well as the journey of self discovery that Charlie Parker is on flows and builds from book to book. Having read a few of the books out of order, I would say that they are really a more satisfying read the way I am currently doing it .. back to back.

Finished: The Killing Kind by John Connolly

I love the way John Connolly uses words. He is a master. The descriptions he uses actually make you think you are driving along that road, in a car with Charlie Parker, sunlight dappling the car through the trees.. and yet.. that sense of foreboding is there, as insubstantial as a shadow. Just amazing. The more I read, the more I enjoy these books! And to think, I only started reading this author because my other half got confused between John Connolly & Michael Connelly!

I like that this book has a map of Maine in the front so you can see where past books have taken place & get an idea of the layout. Obviously I could have just looked at an atlas at any time, but I like the author recognising it helps to have an "in book" reference! I also think that the fact that John Connolly is actually Irish & writing books based in Maine in such detail is great. Dedication to craft. Gotta love that.

Really enjoyed this book. The twist was great as you didn't see it coming. Added to that, I only started reading this authour because the other half accidentally confused him with Michael Connelly. And I got a book in which quite a few events had happened in early episodes of the Charlie Parker series. So to read this, the first, gave me a real insight into Charlie Parker.

Really enjoy Judy Nunn books, mainly because quite a few have been based in or around my home town of Perth. For the historical perspective of these books in particular, I love them, because she talks about things that my dad experienced growing up in Perth, so I know that the accuracy is there.

UPDATE: Didn't post when I finished this. I think it was on the 18th of April. I hurt my neck & ended up in hospital after having a reaction to the medication I was given to help relax my muscles! The joys!!

Enjoyed this final of the trilogy. All those little strings were tied together in a neat little bow. Do I sound cynical much? Yes, but only in so much as I think the realism of this book/series was let down by everything being so neatly "worked out for the best". And thats as much of a spoiler as I will give.

I sort of rushed my way through this book as I was really keen to start reading the last installment in this trilogy. However, once again, the realism with which John Birmingham has portrayed the collapse of the world economy into the void which a "disappeared" America had fallen. He not only looks at the the bigger picture, but also the smaller issues associated with trying to salvage a world which has radically changed.

Finished: Without Warning by John Birmingham

This book was as good the second time around, as it was the first! I find the premise very interesting & I think the way that things deteriorate, after "The Wave" engulfs the entire North American Continent, with the exception of a small section of Washington state, is probably spot on. Things will fall apart. Israel probably will turn the Middle East into a radioactive slag heap, if only to prevent themselves from being turned into one. And as for the mminority of radical muslims & other religions? Well I think how things are portrayed is how they will go down.. or at least in a very similar way. Sad, but true.. extremely scary too. A good what if of the likely results of what happens if the "World's Policeman" aren't around to enforce the Pax americana era..

Finished: Life, Without the Boring Bits by Colleen McCullough

I loved this book. It was so nice to be able to get an insight into how one of my favorite author's formulates thoughts. The way that the essays were all written showed the flow of her thinking, random or otherwise. Rather then being a strict autobiography, it rather addresses different aspects of her own life, as well as wider considerations from religion, to the concept of time. Awesome!

Finished: Triumph by Philip Wylie

Such a stark contrast to his other book "Tomorrow!". This paints the worst possible picture of USSR deceit & essentially shows that they will go to any length to achieve a global communist government. Even if it means destorying the entire northern hemisphere & the vast majority of their own population. With the exception ofcourse of the "chosen few". I suppose that in the time that this book was written, this was a highly likely possibility. The Cold War was in full swing & no one really knew for sure what "the other side" possessed or what they were willing to do. Scary stuff. What's scarier is that today, it's muslim nations (well a small minority of, but thats all it takes) who feel the way the communists in this book do. The question is, are they crazy enough (read the lengths the communists went to in this book & crazy is the only word that fits!) to do the same to achieve their end of a muslim world?

Another post apocalyptic novel :)

How can you be polite?

I have an aquaintance, I hesitate to say friend because, really, I would say he doesn't know me that well. I know him, but well, to be quite frank, he is too absorbed in his own percieved issues to worry about other people. Don't get me wrong, he feigns an interest, until he realises we have stopped talking about him, then he starts whinging again. Or posting comments in which he tries to inflame people thereby getting replies to his posts. When he doesn't he will repost until he gets a response..

Below are some examples of his FB posts (name removed for anonimity)
Posted yesterday(28/022012):  For those who have seen this status from this morning. I have been having to withdraw myself from so many things in the past 6 weeks due to my work hours in a similar way to having depression and that has been impacting on my status updates and maybe some of my comments as well. It's not easy to withdraw from a social life whem you know how badly you need one.

Things were better before October 2009 when I was at **** Transit and now I am trying to get everything back to being similar as they were then, but can't do it on my own as I need real friends to stand by me and help in whatever way possible.
Posted Feb 21 2012: How many Australian people would like somebody else to be Prime Minister? I know that I would like somebody else other that annoying red head that we currently have to put up with.
Now obviously this is only a snapshot. There are ALOT more over the past 5 years. I have tried offering support (non-financial) and advice. He is simply NOT interested in actually changing things. I get the impression that he enjoys being the whinger, because it attracts attention. this has become especially obvious in some of his replies to not only me, but other people. It is the same thing spouted over & over with no change.

The reality is that I have now reached my tolerance level. I can't stand the whinging anymore. I can see he is not going to change, but how can I put to him in such a way that I get across my point without being to harsh? Clearly he does have deep underlying issues (especially with his father) but if he is unwilling or unable to address them, then I feel like I am wasting my time & now, getting frustrated to the point that I will say something rude &/or hurtful without intention.

What to do?

UPDATE[March 2013]: I am still "friends" with the guy. He is now engaged to a woman he only knew (at the time he proposed) for about 3 days. He still has massive financial issues & to make a great story even better, is now expecting a child with this woman. I am actually quite sad as I truly believe a child is a blessing. However, he has used it as an exucse to ramp up his requests for money (why they need to have an ultrasound every 2 weeks & on a private bill I dont know!) and asking who will help buy them what they need for the baby? Well umm, hmm.. if you can't even afford the basics of life for yourself, you don't go having unprotected sex with someone. I will be honest & say this woman totally rubs me the wrong way. She apparently is already kept awake by the baby ( and has pretty much said that since week one!) and so sleeps all day & stays up on the internet all night. Talking to her "ex" husband who I might add she is not even divorced from. Oh & get a job to help contribute you say? No she can't as she is "not cut out for work". Whats she gonna do when the baby comes along & she HAS to work? Because a child is surely the hardest job of all!!!!
Sorry to have a rant on here, but this man-child and his woman are surely a sign of all that is wrong with the world. The world owes you nothing & what you get from it, you will have to earn! I am rant on here because its stops me needing to metaphorically bitch slap stupid people like these two!

Finished: Hiroshima Nagasaki by Paul Ham

Enjoyed this book. It was well written & very well researched. I think it gave an even account from both sides of the war - allies & axis, in terms of events or non events that led not only to the bombing of Hiroshima & Nagasaki, but what in the end was the final bell tolling which caused the surrender of Japan. As someone who has been interested in this specific point in history for neary 2 decades, I found this account eye opening & it did have me questioning what we have been and even to this day are fed by the press. Highly recommend this to history buffs. 5 stars!

Update to earlier Rants

It is a sad but true fact that in the end.. when people break up kids suffer. Be it friendships just forming(as in the case of my daughter & high school mentalities daugher) or even worse, the relationships between kids & their parents when the unthinkable happens and the parents go their separate ways.

High School mentality (here-in refered to as R) treated her husband like shit. I was there. I witnessed it. She treated him like a walking ATM & blamed him for all her woes. They both possessed what my SiL referred to as volatile tempers. He would smash his fists or feet into things out of sheer frustration. They argued ALOT. Needless to say, in recent developments, which someone whom I am a mutual friend of ( I won't call her a friend of R because I know what R really thinks of her) informed me of not realising that we are no longer & have not been for the better part of a year, friends.

To cut it short, he took the "easy" way out & had an affair.. but here is where the sweet irony occurs. Because as we know R had a boob job.. a boob job which she was SURE would "fix everything". So who does the hubby decide to have an affair with? Why a skanky old saggy titted 45yo.. who lives not 5 minutes walk away from their house. Nice. Want to get caught much? And he made sure he did.

Now R LOVES to be the centre of attention. So here is another lovely melodrama that should have the writers of whore & a gay chomping at the bit. It's like she loves living in her own pathetic soapy where there is only one lead.. her. Seriously.. I spent over a year perfecting the right time to say yep.. uh huh, oh no, well, you get the idea. I know you must think me not a good friend for saying that, but the fact I didn't tell her just to fuck off when I had heard the same whinging and moaning story (with no effort to change things or improve the situation) for the 100th time.. well.. that was me being a good "friend". But the sad but trueness of the situation was, at the time I was just her willing (& deluded) audience..  now she has moved on to others. And undoubtedly they too will get spat out once she realises they too have aquired the same glassy eyed vacant stare I developed after so many repeats.

Back to the story.. My friend H told me all about the end of year get-together for PG.. where R spent the entire 4 hours crying & going on & on about how her life sucks.  Most of the women who went apparently left out of sheer disgust when, after trying to talk about other things, she got all huffy and shouted "it's all about me today, I don't give a shit about you".. charming. Makes one glad to have escaped and be able to just hear about things, laugh & breathe a sigh of relief to know I didn't actually have to SIT through it! Sucks to be her new "friends". Hope they didn't want to talk about themselves or share anything about their lives any time soon... HAHAHAHAHAHA

*Disclaimer - yes.. I am a bitch. It's true. I own it. I used to be a nice person to everyone & I still am with my real friends but something about chicks like R just brings out the bitch. Sucks to be them. Also.. yes I bitter about the whole exprience. I extended a hand of friendship & all that it entailed. Only to have it thrown back in my face. Wouldn't you be bitter too? And feel just a little bit used (this is doubly the case when you take the other bitch into consideration).

New Year.. More Books

So it's a new year.. but nothing has changed. Work, kids, uni, weight loss. More books :)

I currently have a pile of about 10 books waiting to be read (some being re-reads *). My aim is to record when I start & finish each book.. mainly for my own purpose.. which is to actually figure out how many books I will read in a year.. which I know is a few!

To date I have read(Starting 25/12/2011):
Designated Targets - John Birmingham*
Final Impact - John Birmingham*
An Indecent Obsession - Colleen McCullough
The Drop - Michael Connelly
Chasing Harry Winston - Lauren Weisberger

Currently reading:
11.22.63 - Stephen King

I got a whole stack of amazon gift vouchers for Christmas & am awaiting the arrival of some more books to add to the "to be read" pile, including all of the Charlie Parker mysteries (bar 2 which I already own) from John Connolly.

To Read Pile(not including books currently ordered from amazon)

Life Without the Boring Bits - Colleen McCullough
Without Warning - John Birmingham*
After America - John Birmingham*
Angels of Vengence - John Birmingham
The Burning Soul - John Connolly
The Reversal - Michael Connelly
Hiroshima & Nagasaki - Paul Ham
Foriegn Influence - Brad Thor
The Lovers - John Connolly*
The Whisperers - John Connolly*
Blue Remembered Earth - Alastair Reynolds (on pre-order)

I had originally designated 2012 the year of re-reads.. but obviously a few new ones have snuck in! However, once I am done with this pile & also with the books coming from Amazon.. I am going to work my way through Alastair Reynolds & then through my rather large apocalyptic/post-apocalyptic collection..

Watch this space....
