Finished: Earth, The new Frontier by Adam Celaya
I love EOW books. I have a massive collection, both books & Kindle verions. Nothing smacks of entertainment better then a bunch of people being stuck in a situation they are thoroughly unprepared for. Well except for the token survivalist/ex-military man whose goon save their sorry asses that is. This book has one of each. And as an added bonus a bunch of weekend warriors/prison guards who think the best prisoner is a dead prisoner. My kind of people. I am pretty sure a bullet is cheaper then keeping someone housed, fed & entertained for however long they are gonna be banged up. Harsh? Yeah, but then I don't pay taxes to support criminals! And I am pretty sure that those self same criminals din't give a rats ass when they wereraping/murdering/stealing from their victim now did they? If they choose to not have a moral compass &/or respect for their fellow man, why should I give that to them?? Gotta give respect to earn it in my book.
Anyhoo.. enough of my personal ramblings.. this book is awesome, if you are a fan of EOW (courtesy of a massive metoer hitting and obliterating the moon) READ THIS. Great editing & great story line. Self published, but done in the correct way, not the cheap ass way!

Finished: The Bunker Book 2: Indiana by EJ Camacho
Hmmm... thanksfully the gayness was somewhat toned down in this book, but not by much. The level of believability was also... low. It's like there is no indecision when they come across other people/groups. Basically they are all "for" the bunker group, in which case they are immediately and without question accepted and trusted fully. As if. There's no hidden agenda's, no subterfuge. Makes it kinda boring as you can see your enemies coming a continent away.
Throw in "Mother" and it just turns bizarre. Clearly all that radiation has caused everyone NOT in the bunker to go completely gaga.
Oh & a little not to the author.. learn the difference between there, their & they're PLEASE!! They're is a contraction of they are & is not to be used where their should be used instead! It just makes for confusing reading!!!
So will I be reading the third book? Undecided. Part of me wants to know what happens, but then its all so batshit boringly predictable that I don't really want to waste my time (or my money!!!) finding out what I can already guess!
Started: The Scarecrow by Michael Connelly
A non-Bosch novel..

I loved this book! It was so well written & the characters just dragged you into their lives. The plot was well constructed & the lovely twist at the end tied up all the questions you had very nicely. I highly recommend this book!!!

So despite not really liking the first of this trilogy, I am persevering with the second. I've already started in fact & already the stilted writing, the forced nature of the script is doing my head in!

Finished: The Bunker Book 1 by EJ Camacho
It's the end of the world as we know it thanks to a giant corporation called Genro deciding they can run the world better then the current incumbant governments. Cue nuclear destruction and Genro trying to recover & carry out thier plans. Their militant wing "Hydra" are clearly all GAY. They fight, train & KILL naked. Yep. Naked. The next breed of "super warriors" are all butt buddies. Apparently because it was good for the Greeks, who felt women were only around for "breeding on" it's good for Hydra.
This book was a seriously disturbing read on so many levels. Firstly the entire book/conversations/description was stilted and forced. The author has clearly never heard or embraced the term "less is more". It felt like he was trying to cover deficiencies in his ability by using word overkill. I say word overkill because he could have made this book half the length and far more enjoyable. A good place to start? The gay naked Hydra. I mean seriously, you gonna take the time to strip naked & fold your clothes before a fight? And the other guy is just going to wait while you do? YOU'RE DEAD FREAK. See thats just another level of disturbing, cause no warrior I know would take the time to get naked & ask his opponent to play nice & not KICK HIS ARSE while he does it.
The gore I think could have been modified. He either went too far or not far enough. He needed to find the happy (pun intended) middle ground. Sadly he failed. Every time.
Now this is the first of a trilogy. I bought the first 2 only on readers reviews which sounded generally favourable. But seriously. I will be struggling to get through. I will go on faith that the second book is better written. And if it's not.. I won't be going back for the third (which is currently unreleased!).

Finished: Beneath the Southern Cross by Judy Nunn
Unfortunately this book was ruined by crap editing. Nothing irks me more then when print books are captured by visual recognition software & then not edited to make sure words haven't become joined thereby turning into a giant soup of letters. And to make things even worse, they charge $10 for the book on Kindle!!!
I really enjoy Judy Nunn books & this was the last currently published one I had to read. As always it was a sweeping historical saga that left me crying at the end. Pity about the editing(or lack thereof).
Started & Finished: The Wardrobe by Judy Nunn
A short story which had a little resembelance to the previous book I read. However, I loved it, it was a sweet tale that actually made me wish it was just a bit longer!
Started & Finished: The House on the Hill by Judy Nunn
Another short story & one which was a complete departure from her usual stories in that it had more of a horror theme. And the ending left you guessing. Great read!
Started: The Bunker Book 1 by EJ Comancho
A post apocalyptic thriller set after a giant corporation has tried to take over the world via the guise of humanitarian assistance. A bit terminator-esque in that the corporation is heavily involved in robotics, however, the robots haven't taken over, there are humans in control.

Finished: The Nuclear Catastrophe by
So.. for 99cents this was an ok read. HOWEVER, the author should have employed a better proof reader & editor. There are some glaringly obvious issues (like the man who survives a nuclear power plant blowing up in his face & then walks over 110kms (70miles) home in less then 5 hours. And the fact the same character lives over looking a canyon... or is that the ocean? Even the author can't remember.
You know that thing I say about indie authors? Well this book just re-inforces that view!
Started: The Unquiet by John Connolly
Ahh well written fiction that uses good editing!

Indie book authors.. my new pet hate & best source of material ever
So I love my Kindle, its like the best piece of technology ever. I am a proponent of "old fashioned books" though, don't get me wrong, but having a kindle has freed me from the burden of always having to carry around a spare book! And it has also opened up the world of indie books.. indie books, like indie movies are put out there but aren't neccessarily quality controlled like the average book. As near as I can figure, most indie books are self published into the ebook format by "authors" who have either not bothered with trying to find a publisher, or who think they don't need one (or can't afford one, so just forgo that part). And while thats all fine & good, I think that perhaps, if you are going to self publish a book & actually sell it for money, then really, invest in an actual editor. Not some random person off the web who says they will do it for free and then actually fucks it up even worse then you already wrote it.
One book that I read recently, I actually reviewed BEFORE I had even finished it because it was so crappily edited (or not at all as the author guiltily revealed) that it was actually detracting from what was otherwise an excellent plot. Yes, it was that bad. NEVER in history has the english language been so defiled(well in my experience anyway!). NEVER should the would "drug" be used in place of drag, dragged or seemingly unrelated words with totally different meanings! It was horrid to read. And I conveyed this to the author! She encouraged review (obviously after ego stroking) and I reviewed my horror. I've read lots of indie books, but this one defintely takes the cake. Needless to say, she was NOT impressed, but well sorry, you put something out there, expect you will get negative comments. I was nice though (ego-stroking) eventually & said it was ok in the second half & the only thing that saved it was the excellent plot.
But here is the lesson for all those indie writers out there.. if you are going to self publish, I would rather you save, pay the money for a proper editor to review your work & then charge a bit more money for your story. Or alternatively, call me, I will edit it for you for a greatly reduced price. I actually learnt english & editing skills at school...
